Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective disorder is a chronic mental health condition that affects a person’s emotions, thinking and behaviors and can impact all aspects of daily life. It is characterized primarily by symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations or delusions, and symptoms of a mood disorder, such as mania and depression. A combination of genetics and environmental factors are believed to cause the disorder.

Symptoms tend to present in early adulthood and are more prevalent with females. Symptoms may be severe and should be monitored closely. These include:

  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Disorganized thinking
  • Depressed mood
  • Manic behavior

Because schizoaffective disorder involves many kinds of symptoms, diagnosis is often complicated and treatment can be complex. However, it can be managed effectively thru the combination of medication and therapy.
